Program Overview

The WFUNA Model UN Summer Camp: New York will combine the study of the Sustainable Development Goals with training in how to accurately simulate meetings in the UN General Assembly. This session of the WFUNA Model UN Camp will focus on the how to address the growing environmental crisis that is emerging as a result of marine plastic litter and micro plastics which is associated with SDG 14: Life Below Water. A report from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, in partnership with the World Economic Forum projects the oceans will contain at least 937 million tons of plastic and 895 million tons of fish by 2050. Our camp seeks to prepare students to be positive forces for change in their communities by putting an emphasis on global citizenship, collaboration, responsibility, and empathy for others.

The first half of camp, you will learn key concepts and terminology related to SDG 14. In addition, you will acquire key cognitive strategies that will assist you in making connections between big ideas on how to solve this global problem such as, problem formulation, summarizing and synthesizing, problem solving, and monitoring comprehension. The second half of camp, you will learn about the processes that real UN diplomats use to achieve consensus on which solutions should be enacted to reduce this problem and restore the ocean’s ecosystems to a more sustainable environment. In the process you will acquire skills in public speaking and doing research. By the end of camp you will have formed new friendships and acquired knowledge and skills that are considered key elements in helping you get ready for college and eventually pursuing a career.

After a day of learning and research, the evenings will be filled with entertaining games and activities. Excursions in the city will also be organized to give you a chance to explore the wonderful sights and sounds of New York.

The WFUNA Model UN camp is led by a former UN staff member who worked in the UN Secretariat for over 14 years and has been involved with Model UN for over 50 years. No other camp of this type can offer this level of expertise!
