The Real UN Experience

WIMUN is a Model UN conference for those who truly want to learn about how diplomacy is conducted inside the United Nations, which is very different from what is simulated in traditional Model UNs. The New York conference takes place at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York, features UN speakers and workshops, and uses the WIMUN approach and practices developed by the UN Department of Public Information. With 1,300 delegates from over 70 countries coming to New York City, WIMUN has become a must-do conference for every Model UN enthusiast and newcomer alike.

The most accurate simulation

WIMUN offers the most accurate simulation of the United Nations by using the WIMUN approach and features training and briefings delivered by UN officials. WIMUN New York is held at the Grand Hyatt in Manhattan while WIMUN India is held at Jaypee Palace Hotel and Convention Centre, Agra. WIMUN Geneva will be held at the Centre International de Conférences Genève near the UN Office in Geneva.

UN Speakers and Workshops

WIMUN features United Nations officials or diplomats as speakers on the topics for every committee, and topics selected are from the actual UN agenda. This helps delegates understand the topics in-depth and in how they are debated, negotiated, and implemented in real life. Furthermore, the conference begins with WIMUN training by Mr. Bill Yotive, who developed the WIMUN approach while at the United Nations Department of Public Information, as well as workshops led by the experienced WIMUN staff on practical delegate skills in a WIMUN simulation. Many delegates are participating in WIMUN simulations for the first time, and this ensures that everyone is comfortable and confident in getting the most out of their experience.

WIMUN Approach

WIMUN is WFUNA’s global flagship MUN conference and uses the WIMUN approach to simulating UN meetings of the General Assembly and Security Council developed by the United Nations Department of Public Information. WIMUN approach offers the most accurate simulation of the United Nations in the world and gives participants an experiential insight into how the UN really functions. This includes an emphasis on adopting resolutions by consensus, meaning delegates negotiate until they all agree on the text of a draft resolution and can formally adopt it without needing to vote. The collaborative nature of consensus building process is in stark contrast to the competitive voting process used in traditional Model UNs. In addition, WIMUN approach replaces the parliamentary Rules of Procedure used by traditional MUNs with rules that are based on the actual rules used by the United Nations General Assembly and Security Council.

International Friendships

WIMUN had delegates, staff, and advisors come from 70 countries from all six inhabited continents last year. But diversity at WIMUN is more than just about statistics. WIMUN keeps the size of its committees smaller than typical Model UN conferences, which allows for more quality interactions with delegates in each committee. Its consensus-based approach makes committee feel much more diplomatic and cordial than in competitive Model UNs. And its location in the heart of Midtown with plenty of famous attractions within walking distance makes it inviting for newfound friends to explore New York City together.
