TUESDAY, JANUARY 30, 2018

WFUNA Youth Advisory Council representatives for Asia, Europe and North America, Hafidzi Razali, Edoardo Morgante and RJ Johnson respectively, were recently in New York City participating at the ECOSOC Youth Forum that took place the 30th – 31st of January, 2018. The ECOSOC Youth Forum is the largest UN gathering for young people to engage with the UN system, particularly in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

With the theme, “The role of youth in building sustainable and resilient urban and rural communities”, this ECOSOC Youth Forum brought over 38 Ministers and youth officials and over 700 participants around the world to review progress, as it relates to youth, on access to water, sanitation (SDG 6), energy (SDG 7), sustainable and inclusive cities (SDG 11), sustainable consumption and production (SDG 12), sustainably managed forests (SDG 15), use of science, technology and innovations in facilitating youth engagement, development and resilience (SDG 17).

The first day included plenary sessions showcasing concrete areas and initiatives led by government, youth, and other stakeholders, in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda followed by breakout sessions on each SDGs mentioned above. The second day focused on breakout sessions on regional concerns and priorities for SDG implementation, followed by discussions on means of implementation and financing youth development, as well as, pledges of commitments from different stakeholders present in the forum highlighting how they plan to contribute to take this agenda forward.

WFUNA Youth Advisory Council representative for North America, RJ Johnson, was selected to provide commitments on behalf of the International Coordination Meeting of Youth Organizations (ICMYO): “Our path to a better world is real, and, thankfully, we have 17 global goals guiding the way. We are in the driver’s seat…We know that if we are to succeed, we must ensure that we engage, energize, educate, and empower our communities to join us in acting and being advocates for the Sustainable Development Goals.”
