MeetUNSCPres - January 2018 - Kazakhstan

On January 8, 2018, the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) convened the ninth in a series of Civil Society Dialogues with the President of the United Nations Security Council at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

The dialogue featured H.E. Kairat Umarov, Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan to the United Nations and President of the UN Security Council for the month of January. Ms. Margaret Williams, WFUNA’s Senior Peace and Security Officer, moderated the discussion that brought together over 25 UN-focused civil society representatives.

Ambassador Umarov highlighted Kazakhstan's priorities for the month of January which include nonproliferation and confidense-building measures, Afganistan and Central Asia, and the Middle East. He also emphasized the importance of transparency in UN processes and partnership with non-governmental organizations. Ambassador Umarov then answered questions from CSO representatives on a wide range of topics including nuclear disarmament, the role of youth in peacekeeping, Burma, Yemen, North Korea, and Myanmar, among other issues.
