Briefing with Jane Connors, UN Victim's Rights Advocate on Sexual Exploitation and Abuse

Briefing with Jane Connors, UN Victim's Rights Advocate on Sexual Exploitation and Abuse

Briefing with Jane Connors, UN Victim's Rights Advocate on Sexual Exploitation and Abuse

THURSDAY, MARCH 29, 2018

On March 29, 2018, the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) convened over 60 representatives from Member States and civil society at the Palais des Nations in Geneva for a dialogue on advocating for victims of sexual exploitation and abuse (SEA) perpetrated under the United Nations flag.

The dialogue featured Ms. Jane Connors, the United Nations' first Victims' Rights Advocate, appointed by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Mr. Bonian Golmohammadi, WFUNA’s Secretary-General, moderated the discussion that described how the UN intends to uphold the rights of and provide support for the victims of SEA. Ms. Connors then answered questions from the floor as well as those submitted online in advance and from those watching the live stream on Facebook. The questions covered a wide range of topics, including how the UN can strengthen accountability of Troop and Police Contributing Countries, how Member States can better support the Secretary-General's current "zero-tolerance" initiatives, and how the UN Victims' Rights Advocate and Field Advocates have responded to the most recent cases of SEA.

Missed it? Watch the recording or read through our Twitter recap.

WFUNA has launched the Not under the UN Flag campaign as a space for the UN, Member States, civil society organizations and the public at large to mobilize and lobby for concrete collective actions to achieve the goal of zero SEA cases in UN peace operations. Join the campaign today!
